At Woodford Medical Cambridge we offer Botox® injections for a variety of conditions. Among its lesser-known but highly effective applications is for the treatment of migraine headaches. In July 2010, the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency) licensed Botox® specifically for migraine treatment following extensive trials.

Before receiving licensing approval, Botox® underwent rigorous testing involving 1,384 migraine sufferers over a span of 56 weeks. Through comparative studies with a placebo, Botulinum Toxin demonstrated significant efficacy. Remarkably, after the trial period, 70% of those treated with Botox® experienced a reduction of more than half in the frequency of migraines, offering profound relief to sufferers.

Understanding the mechanism of Botox® in migraine relief

Botox® operates by targeting the small nerves responsible for transmitting pain signals from the head to the brain, known as C-fibres. By reducing the release of certain chemicals from these nerve endings, Botox® effectively interrupts the feedback pathway that perpetuates migraines.

Administration of Botox® Injections for migraine treatment

Botox® is administered through a series of small injections placed strategically under the skin or into specific muscles around the forehead, scalp and the base of the skull. Dr Allan and her Cambridge team recommend the treatment to be repeated every three months. Often clients begin to notice improvements after the first and second set of injections.

Assessing the effectiveness of Botox® for migraine relief

The use of Botox® for migraine relief generally leads to a significant improvement in quality of life, with fewer and less severe symptoms. In some cases, migraines disappear entirely, though more commonly, they become less intense and occur less frequently, offering clients a renewed sense of comfort and relief.
